Checkoff helps install cheese pushers in 146 giant grocery stores to boost sales

SYRACUSE, NY – As part of the American Dairy Association North East’s dairy aisle “makeover” program, it partnered with Giant Food Stores in Pennsylvania to install cheese pushers in the shredded cheese sections of 146 stores – a system that increases product sales and decreases labor costs.

Retailers in the ADA North East six-state area report that average cheese sales increased 4% at most stores where ADA North East helped install spring-loaded cheese pushers. Studies show that it also benefits retailers by reducing product turnaround time by 31% and shelf restocking time by 26%.

In May 2021, ADA North East launched the cheese pusher project in five Giant test stores with minimal investment. The ADA North East retail team installed the spring-loaded pushers that hold the shredded cheese packets to the front of the shelf.

After analyzing sales increases and labor savings in the three months following the test project, Giant installed pushers in three other stores undergoing renovations. In January 2022, Giant began installing the cheese pusher systems in all stores, completing installations by April 2022. In total, the retailer has invested approximately over $730,000 in equipment to better serve its customers. customers and increase overall grated cheese sales.

ADA North East also works with retailers to install pushers for chunky cheese as well as grated cheese, depending on the needs of each store to meet consumer demand.

The cheese pushers and other merchandising concepts launched throughout the region by ADA North East are part of its Dairy Aisle Reinvention program that offers a “makeover” to the dairy aisle. These new looks include cheese pushers, as well as yogurt dividers, farm-to-table signage featuring local farm families, and updated signage to help shoppers find the real dairy.
