Delhi liquor dispute resonates in Gujarat countryside – The New Indian Express

The political jolts of the so-called Delhi alcohol scam are being felt more in Gujarat than where it originated. The BJP and the AAP are embroiled in a bitter tussle over the issue in election-time Gujarat. The state BJP has gone out of its way to present the AAP as a party run with money from corrupt deals. The AAP claims its growing popularity in Gujarat is the reason its ministers in Delhi are being raided and indicted. The AAP has launched a strident campaign in Gujarat. His plan to enter the tribal areas of the state in alliance with the Bharatiya Tribal Party did not work out. Still, Kejriwal draws crowds to urban centers, especially Surat and Ahmedabad. Both districts are BJP strongholds and represent 28 of the 182 constituencies. Arvind Kejriwal had recently announced that polls conducted by his party showed the AAP leading with seven seats in Surat where the party won its first municipal seat. He said his party’s tally would improve further as the campaign resumes. The AAP campaign sent alarm bells to the BJP.

The ruling party’s margin of victory against the main opposition Congress was slim and many of its seats came from urban areas. Despite being disempowered in the state for decades, the Congress continues to enjoy considerable support in rural areas of Gujarat. As the Congress holds its ground in rural Gujarat and Kejriwal launches an attack on the BJP’s urban stronghold, the ruling party has its hands full trying to defend its stronghold. The ruling party’s attack focuses more on the AAP than on Congress. The fight between the two parties will get dirtier as the national elections draw closer.

The Directorate of Law Enforcement has already arrested Delhi’s Health Minister, Satyendar Jain, and it is only a matter of time before another minister, Manish Sisodia, is arrested. Sisodia is the minister of finance and excise, the two departments directly linked to the formulation and implementation of the new liquor policy in Delhi. He is also the second most important person in the AAP as deputy chief minister in the Kejriwal government. With incessant raids on dozens of locations, the ED would have gathered evidence against Sisodia. His arrest will be the BJP’s big play in the Gujarat elections.
