Fire destroys one of Walkerton’s only convenience stores

WALKERTON, Indiana (WNDU) – At approximately 2:40 a.m., law enforcement responded to a call reporting a fire at 200 Roosevelt Road.

When police arrived at Casey’s general store, they noticed that the store windows had been burnt to the ground.

“The surroundings were nice, the people were nice and, you know, it sucks to find out that this small town convenience store catches fire,” said Courtney Moore, a resident of Walkerton.

Six fire departments helped put out the blaze, which took about an hour and a half.

The interior of the store was completely destroyed, but the overall structure is recoverable.

“We appreciate these fire departments for helping us. We have contacted the State Fire Marshal and Walkerton Police Department as well as the State Fire Marshal we are currently investigating the fire, ”said Detective Travis Jackson, Walkerton Police Department .

The police told us that no injuries had been reported because no one was inside the store at the time of the fire.

With repairs needing to be done, many residents are desperately wondering when the Casey General Store will reopen.

“I can’t speak for Casey’s general store. I had a brief conversation with one of the people at the company and it looks like they’re not going anywhere. They’re going to try to get over this as quickly as possible and hopefully be open as soon as possible, ”Detective Jackson said.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but police have told us that once they complete their investigation, they will share this information with us, and we will let you know.
