Liquor World, located in Las Vegas, NV, is a 10,000 square foot facility with an extensive selection of wines, spirits, beers, mixers and accessories. It also contains a 1,500 square foot craft beer and wine bar, air-conditioned wine cellar, cigar cellar, and walk-in beer cellar. It is one of five locations around the Las Vegas resort corridor, with six other locations in the southwest portion of the Las Vegas Valley.
During the pandemic, the state deemed liquor stores non-essential. Nevada was one of only two states to do so. Matthew Lilley, Managing Director, recalls: “We were completely closed for almost 21 days. After that, we got a temporary delivery license (delivery was illegal before).
This presented its own challenges as we needed to build a delivery platform and logistics within days. Once stores reopened delivery remained but has since ceased and business has returned to a more normal pace. »
While dealing with all of these challenges, Liquor World has grown with a number of new locations. “We had a lot going on in 2021,” Lilley says. “We opened three new locations, one new onsite location and moved another store. We are slowing down in 2022 as we regroup with the rapid expansion behind us and move forward, but we will pick up again in early 2023.”
According to Lilley, the expansion process was quite complex. “It was really difficult. Material costs skyrocketed, fixtures were in arrears going back 48 weeks, and permits and licenses were delayed. It was very difficult to navigate because it changed every day. We had four projects going on at one time and it was a real balancing act, but we have a strong core team that was able to come together to do it all and open the stores successfully.
When asked to define success in the industry, Lilley emphasized the importance of customer loyalty. “Without customer retention, it’s hard to keep growing your business. We achieve this through fair pricing, excellent selection, and personal, knowledgeable service at all of our locations.
He argues that Liquor World stands out for its convenience and “small store service.” “We don’t carry everything, but we offer what people are looking for,” he says. “We are focused on making new items available as they hit the market and making sure our customers know we have the latest and greatest. We have trained beverage specialists in our locations who only focus on customer service on the sales floor. We are also Nevada’s largest private barrel liquor retailer.
